IFSTP's main tasks are...
- to support the Member Societies through international coordination and initiatives
- to interact with global and – as far as needed – with regional scientific and regulatory bodies active in areas related to toxicologic pathology
- to advance the science of toxicologic pathology and to contribute to the resolution of issues in this field on a global level
- to promote high professional standards of pathologists involved in toxicologic pathology by defining standard requirements, promote education and accrediting toxicologic pathologists

Typical activities include
- to foster exchange of information among Member Societies at annual board meetings, scientific meetings, through the website, e-mails, etc.
- to organize international meetings at least every 3 years
- to promote international professional standards
- to provide international accreditation to toxicologic pathologists through the International Academy of Toxicologic Pathology (IATP)
- to collaborate with other federations such as IUTOX
- to interact with governmental and intergovernmental bodies
(In 1995, IFSTP contributed to the abandonment of the Delaney Clause of US EPA)
- to support creation of new societies of toxicologic pathology
- to support training in developing countries in the area of toxicologic pathology
- to gather demographic data about toxicologic pathologists

Current special activities include
- Organization of the 6th international congress of toxicologic pathology together with the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology (to take place in 2007)
- Implementing the 5-year business plan covering among others the following aspects: science, education, regulations, liaison and communication.
IFSTP functions with low cost (5 $ per individual member of a Member Society)
